Choice of fonts, backgroud colours. Search /Replace, multi undo/redo, block selection mode, spell-checking for multiple languages, macros, unlimited file size, no line length limitation. And on top of it the best available syntax highlighting (customizable) of any editor (built in for everything common such as HTML, C++, Perl, etc, but not only good for programmers: makes als your autoexec.bat and .ini foles more legible). EditPad Classic

Freeware.
EditPad is a replacement for the standard Windows NotePad. It runs under Windows 95/98/NT4/2000. No additional DLLs or whatever are required.

Have tried many of the editors listed on this page, but love EditPad Lite (a freebee) for quick editing, and EditPad Pro when I need more features. File Editor for Win

Gnu Emacs

JEdit

Some of jEdit's features include: Built-in macro language (BeanShell). Extensible plugin architecture, with more than 60 plugins available. JFE (Jens file editor)

KEDIT

I have been using KEDIT for many years. It is extremely powerful but needs getting used to. It is a PC version of IBM's old XEDIT editor which ran on VM/CMS systems. There are both DOS and Windows versions of KEDIT. (Peter Kelen, August 23, 2002)

MED

MED is in its features pretty close to UltraEdit, but I like it better. It is intended for programmers, has syntax highlighting, of course, and is very configurable with the corresponding compiler and help file you need and much more. - It is a pitty that it is that unknown. Metapad 3.0, 3.5beta

This is a great replacement for Notepad. It is just slightly larger, handles Dos, Unix, and Unicode. I've tried NoteTab, and some others, usually going back to Notepad but not this time. It's like notepad on steroids. (Richard, November 02, 2001)

Notespad

NotesPad (32-bit) is an excellent replacement for the Windows Notepad application. NotesPad improves upon Notepad in a number of ways. Notetab

Best text editor around. Free and registered version. No size limit, multitabs, programmation, clip languages, HTML support (can be used as Web editor), fast, color-coding, etc. Best shareware/freeware in its category. Programmer's File Editor

Programmer's File Editor is a 32-bit text editor primarily oriented toward program developers. Though it contains features such as the ability to run compilers and development applications, it also makes a good general-purpose editor for any other function. Features include multilevel undo, active buttons on a tear-off toolbar, automatic C-aware indenting, Unix file support, remappable keys, keyboard macros, and more. Freeware. PSPad is a solid and flexible multipurpose editor. TextPad

It's an excellent plain text editor because it can be configured with syntax definition files, so itcan be used to edit files in several langauges (C++, HTML, javascript, java, etc.) ant it can be used to manage files for Windows, DOS or UNIX files. TDE the Thomson-Davis Editor

TDE is a simple, public domain, multi-file/multi-window binary and text file editor written for IBM PCs and close compatibles running MSDOS, Win32 (console) or Linux. TDE is suitable for editing batch files, binary files, text files, and various computer language source code files (with configurable syntax highlighting). The only limit on the number and size of files that TDE can handle is the amount of memory. Likewise, the only limit on the number of windows is the amount of memory. Ultra Edit

Great editor for all kinds of editing requirements. Shareware (US$30 or so to buy). Syntac hilite for lots of file types. Great multi file search functions. Macros, column mode, file compare, multilevel undo etc. A bit thin on advanced macro features (I spoiled from BRIEF). (Andreas Hagele, November 15, 2000)

VDE

VDE has a very long pedigree and now very stable. Wordstar keystrokes (but configurable to what you want), very fast insterface, support for Windows Long Filenames, support for large files, support for windows clipboard. Will read (extract text) from various word processor formats. Lots of configuration options. Integrates nicely with ZTeeWin and can ""feel"" like 1-word if that's what you're used to. Vedit

Edit absolutely any file - text, data, binary (hex) or EBCDIC; even 100+ Gigabyte files. It has every advanced feature you need, is easy to use, can quickly edit any file, has keystroke AND command macros and is fully customizable. The command macro language is fully programmable. VIM

WinVi

WinVi is a free editor for MS Windows. The executable file is available in two variations: a 32-bit version for Windows 95 and Windows NT, a 16-bit version for Windows 3.1 and Windows 3.11. This editor is especially useful for friends of the Vi editor, who do not want to give up the little conveniences offered by Windows. Imho, the advantages of WinVi suggest a turn to this editor. xemacs

XEmacs is the extensible, customizable, self-documenting real-time display editor. Very difficult to learn and master, yet this the most powerfull editor ever. It has very strong tools for writing programs in C, lisp, and many other languages. It has syntax highliting based on regular expressions — called font-lock It has a built-in calculator that can sum up a few numbers grabbed from the text, as well as compute the prime number that is higher than 300figure number.
