Information, tips and tutorials for ZTree file manager
Wishesgranted
ZTreeWin Wishes Granted!
The wishes below were expressed then granted!
1. Paste/Copy script name
added by Laurent, Feb 15, 2007When copying and pasting ZAM scripts with W,F4, the name of the script is not included. Only the script part is handled. It would be nice to have name scripted copied/pasted as well, as it would help distribution / inclusion / documentation of scripts, notably throught Wiki pages. This way, somebody could highlight all code on a page (including proposed script name) and simply paste it in his ZAM menu.
implemented 1.60.rc26 (Feb 28, 2007)
2. Unicode support
added by Laurent, Feb 15, 2007Obviously a 2.0 wish.
Implemented v2.0.60
11. eXecute from within the internal Viewer
added by Hartmut, Feb 16, 2007ZEP: add an eXecute command within the Viewer. Purpose: return to current view after having executed something.
shrunk by Hartmut Jun 4, 2007
implemented 1.61.1 (21 July 2007)
12. Viewer to recall the current offset/line
added by Hartmut, Feb 16, 2007ZEP for a possibility in Viewer to recall the current offset/line
When Line display mode is On, the offset should read/fetch the currently highlighted line number, instead of the usual top line number.
shrunk by Hartmut Jun 4, 2007
implemented 1.60.1 (24 May 2007)
19. Ctrl-Zlist allow Tag & Untag files in an entire BRANCH
Edit Ben Kent July 21 2007 See http://www.ztw3.com/archive/020/archive.cgi?read=76737implemented 1.61.2 (23 July 2007)
22. ZTW /API with time and % and stop-copying support
How can I get CopyFileEx() to work with ZTree?ALT-m (Mirror) can use it also.
implemented 1.61.1 (21 July 2007)
24. Application Menu for files which contain %
implemented 1.60.125. Alt-F4 Compare (from B/S/G file window) should sort resultant list by name
XTreeGold did this. Does anyone else miss it? (Requested by John Montenigro; implemented in 1.61.36)26. Ignore history for translated filespecs
implemented 1.60.127. Display full LFN name of the current file
added by pseakins, 13 May 2007I would like to see the full LFN name of the current file displayed either on an additional line in the FILE COMMANDS panel or by wrapping the Current File display in the DIRECTORY Statistics panel or in the Title bar in the manner of TitleChangerZAAP.
implemented 1.60.1
29. Allow ZTree to display in the Windows Title Bar (and Windows Taskbar), whatever a particular ZTree instance was pointing to, be it a file or a directory (or other possibilities?).
Added by Tom Foote, May 26, 2007<blockquote>Posted to ZTreeWin Forum By: Tom Foote
Date: May 25,2007 at 23:31 (and edited some--Tom)
I like the idea of displaying in the Windows Title Bar, a file name when that is ZTree's focus (as ZTree does so nicely now), and <b>a directory name when that is ZTree's focus.</b> For me, the latter addition would further boost my ability to distinguish from among the (sometimes many) ZTree instances running concurrently, that automatically appear (with their respective Windows Title Bar titles) in the Windows Taskbar.
Furthermore, this might be viewed as "more consistent" in so far as the Windows Title Bar (and Windows Taskbar), then, would always display whatever a particular ZTree instance was pointing to, be it a file or a directory (or other possibilities?).
Finally, if someone did not want directories (or other screen identifiers) displayed, perhaps a configuration toggle could allow them to customize ZTree to display only what they want . . .</blockquote>
(Wow! As of today, Wednesday, May 30, 2007, Kim has promptly implemented, and refined the above changes--e.g., the display of file and directory names in the Windows Title, and Task Bars. So far, they seem to work fine for me. Thank you, Kim!)
P.S. For folks who still need more screen real estate to see the file and directory names that different instances of ZTree now display in the Windows Task Bar, consider the approach I describe on this Forum post:
And, then edited slightly, here (currently Quick Reference Tip #4):
implemented 1.60.1
30. Viewer Context Lines Feature
This feature relates to configuring the viewer to precede a found search term with some number of "context" lines? I find myself hitting space to perform a search and then up arrow 5-20 times to see what is just above the highlighted term for context. It seems like this would be important for anyone using the viewer with source code...http://www.ztw3.com/archive/023/archive.cgi?read=89540
added by Phil, Jun 1, 2007; implemented 1.61.34
36. Show time remaining in hh.mm.ss instead of mmmm.ss
added by dlegate, Jun 9, 2007When doing long file operations, show the time remaining with hours, minutes, seconds if it exceeds 60 minutes, instead of showing many hundreds or thousands of minutes.
implemented 1.61.1 (21 July 2007)
40. Ignore free space when copying/moving files
added by Ross smith, July 20, 2007When copying/moving to a remote drive, the free space may be incorrectly reported. For example, my Linux system has a small 200MB / partition, and a large 400GB /data partition. If I map Z: to the / folder and try to copy a 300MB file to Z:\data, I immediately get "Error: Insufficient disk space". All other programs (copy, xcopy, robocopy, explorer, etc.) allow the copy.
implemented 1.61.1 (21 July 2007)
43. Split Screen Independent Sorting
Added by John Gruener, July 22, 2007Provide the ability to have independent sorting on each side of a split screen.
More detail and history here:
ZEP - Split Screen Sort Order
Interface Design Summary
Add a toggle to the Alt-Sort menu (even if the screen is not yet split) to set a session-sticky mode.
Suggested Alt-Sort function key: F8 (same/diff).
Add a CO to set the default for the Alt-Sort F8 toggle:
CO-3E "Split Screen Sort mode" (Same/Different)
Add CL switches to override the default: /SSD, /SSS.
implemented 1.61.4 (7 August 2007)
44. Revert sort order of leave File Window option
added by Ben Kent, Aug 08, 2007I often find that I temporarily need a different sort order in a file window and because I have a large number of files logged at work, I have to remember to revert the sort order before leaving the file window otherwise I have to wait for ZTree to resort. If there was a new toggle on the Alt-Sort dialog to revert the sort on exit of the File Window, I could choose the option when setting the temporary sort order.
implemented 1.61.7 (13 August 2007)
45. Add renaming file count number to rename mask
added by R.O., Aug 08, 2007When renaming a group of files in a sequential set, the number of files in the sequence should be available in the rename mask.
Please add this feature by using the backslash character, with the number of consecutive backslashes denoting the number of characters to be used (from right to left).
This functionality is needed for renaming a group of related files, be it data from a common source or a large file split into several smaller pieces.
As an example, let there be 25 files, tagged, filtered, and beginning with the letters "SW" that need to be renamed in a sequential fashion using the following mask:
??_Regional_Sales.:d\\:_of_\\.RPT
This would result in the following files:
SW_Regional_Sales.25_of_25.RPT
...
SW_Regional_Sales.01_of_25.RPT
This feature might be alternatively implemented by using the ordinal number for the currently highlighted file - with additional work to re-arrange the display to accommodate, and to re-arrange it back again. This would suffice, if it is considerably easier to implement, or Kim feels it is of more utility than the above number of rename files. I could not come up with any added utility for using ordinals in the mask.
implemented 1.61.78 (9 January 2008)
47. Make to have a change to toggle
added by Ben Kent, Aug 14, 2007Often after I have created a directory, the first thing I want to do is to move the highlight to it, so that I can do something in the directory, e.g.
Run a process in the new directory.
Edit a new file.
Use it as the destination of a copy from the opposite Split pane.
To make this easer, I would like there to be a function key toggle added to the Make directory command, to change to the new directory after it has been created.
This would also make certain macros easer to code. For example when this new toggle in effect and the directory already existed, the "Directory already exists" error could be skipped and the highlight moved to the requested directory, then the macro would not have to know/assume that the directory existed or needed to be created.
implemented 1.61.32
50. Expand Command Line Logging Options to Include /L2, /L3 . . . /L9
added by Tom Foote, Aug 24, 2007Expand the following command line logging options to include /L2, /L3 . . . /L9 to allow for logging more subdirectory levels than just the first (relative to any selected directory or subdirectory).
Current command line logging options from F1 help file:
/L1 - Log 1st directory level only. Same as Alt-Log-One.
/LF - Log Full. Log all files and directories on the disk drive.
/LQ - Log Quietly. Use with CAUTION! Prevents all drive and branch
logging operations from displaying error messages for the entire
ZTreeWin session.
/LT - Log Tree only. Logs the entire directory tree, without logging any
files. Same as Alt-Log-Tree.
(Is that all of them?)
added by Tom Foote, Sep 10, 2007
Wow--and, thanks, again, Kim, for promptly implementing the above! It works wonderfully. (Thus far.)
Kim's request for more info, and my reply, including ways in which I might use the above improvement, appear in this Forum post:

51. Hide/Unhide Current File
added by Hartmut, Sep 13, 2007I'd wish to have ALT_H (hide/unhide directory) for files as well.
The command ALT_H seems available for it (even ztw.hlp/4 Quick Command Table says so).
Spec: if file's not hidden, set Hidden attribute, else clear it (toggle, same as for directory).
implemented v1.61.31
52. Alt-Wash - cancel: give option to leave temp file/s
added by dlegate, Sep 14, 2007When pressing ESC during Alt-W(ash) it would be nice for a confirm prompt, especially after a really long write. And it would be nice if it could "leave" the current temp file(s) where they are, so that you can resume it later.
implemented v1.61.32
55. Alt-F7 when already zoomed.
added by Ben Kent Oct 11, 2007I start ZTree zoomed with /MAX, then sometimes in a session I want to make the ZTree console smaller, so I press Alt-F7, which does nothing because Alt-F7 toggles between zoomed and the previous console size, which was zoomed.
I propose that if Alt-F7 would result in no change, then switch the console size to 25x80 or 50x80.
implemented v1.61.49
56. Open within archive view
added by Hartmut Oct 22, 2007Sometimes it would be great if the user could simply "open" the current file within the Alt-F5 archive view.
ZTree should simply extract it to the ZTMP directory (below the TMP dir) and "open" it (in the associated Windows application). No additional files should be extracted.
The extracted file should stay there until the ZTMP directory is removed when closing ZTree.
implemented v1.61.51/53
63. Mouse support during Gather
added by Dan LeGate Jan 19, 2008During a "Gather" when viewing a file, I wish I could move the line indicator using the mouse, to make it jump down to exactly where I want to hit Enter.
implemented v1.61.83
66. ZAAP - Indicate when the stats panel is *visible*
added by Ian, 30 Jan 200870. Alt-Release All Except Current Directory / Branch
added by John Gruener, March 5, 2008Two new functions are being proposed, one to release all except the current Directory, and another to release all except the current Branch. These would nicely complement the existing ability of releasing all except the current Drive, and releasing the current Directory and Branch.
In a BSG FW, to be consistent with what Alt-Release is now doing, then these should release all except where the current file resides.
In the Alt-Release menu, either change "All other drives" to a toggle that would say "All except (no/yes)", or else add a new toggle that simply says "Except (no/yes)". Pressing that first, then "Branch", "Current directory", or "This drive" would do the job. If "Except" is used then "All other drives" becomes redundant and should be removed.

Implemented in v2.0.62
73. Allow specifying the number of levels to be logged in ZLS files
added by Martijn Coppoolse, July 21, 2008It would be nice if ZLS files supported a way of specifying the number of directory levels to log, like Alt-[L]og [3]. This could perhaps be done by adding a digit to the L= command; e.g.
L3=C:\Program Files
Implemented in v2.0.63
75. Provide an Error Log File
added by John Gruener, July 22, 2008Provide a temporary log file listing all errors that occur during multiple-file copy operations, such as Alt-Copy and Alt-Mirror.
Implemented in v2.0.63, enable with C0-6W
79. Open dir.lnk jumps ztw to dir
added to wishlist by Stephen Rawling Sep 23, 2008. Wish granted in ZTreeWin v2.089 (28 September 2008) but removed in v2.091(5th October 2008) and replaced by Alt-Goto which navigates in ZTW to the object of ANY lnk fileShortcuts are typically named after the specified object and "opening" them starts up the associated application and loads the file.
IMO. a shortcut to a directory(i.e. dir.lnk) is an exceptional shortcut. Opening a dir.lnk starts a new instance of the default file manager (explorer) and automatically navigates to the specified directory. If they are like myself, users of third party file managers would most likely expect (prefer?) a dir.lnk to either open a new instance of their current file manager at the specified directory or more simply navigate to the specified directory within the currently active instance of that file manager.
My knowledge of the ZTW Open command is limited but I would suggest this could be done by an initial search of every lnk file for whatever identifies it as a dir.lnk and if so identified the normal shell process would be replaced by the above. Starting up explorer would still be provided by using alt-X TAB ENTER
