rpVT Version history

Last wishes of Rudy

The author of rpVT, Rudy_Penteado, passed away February 24, 2006(external link). Although rpVT has been always free, a few months before his death, Rudy decided to keep version A350 public and freely downloadable from his website and to limit the distribution of subsequent builds (versions A400 to A410) to registered users only.

This change of policy was not for money. Rudy simply required name, photo and bio of users and sent a private build in return. The personal motive for this requirement is unknown, but some believe he wanted simply to have a closer cyber-relationship with long-time hard core Ztree users just before going away. For posterity, the original text of his late request has been kept.

''You cannot download a recently issued rpVT update. You will have to register with us and the update will be sent to your E-mail address. If you are already registered, remember that if a new version is available, it does not mean an update will be sent to you automatically. A note like "Update me" in the Forum or a short E-mail to Rudy, will be necessary for you to receive the update. Please, do not use your number in the Forum.
Your registration number is private. Only you should know it. A last word: You cannot, under any circumstance, pass this executable to anybody else.

If you do not want to register, you can download this rather old (but perfectly functional) version - A350, to be able to test the software before registering. (Registering is free)

A few things you should know before registering:

1) There is no use for rpVT without ZTree. If you don't know what ZTree is, there is no point in reading this.
2) The rpVT users group is a very small subset of the ZTree users. Many of them are people with experience in 'Embedded Systems Design' and they eat hardware and machine code for breakfast. Some are very skilled programmers that don't know hardware. A few are Computer Systems Administrators. Finally, many of them are experienced computer users that just like it.
3) We are not hackers. We write software instead of cracking it. Although we consider ourselves experts in assembler, this is not a site to learn it.
4) Your E-mail is going to be used to send you updates that you specifically request or to answer questions that involve your project and are not of public interest to be answered in the Forum. You will not receive an E-mail from us, unless you ask for it. No piece of information sent to us via E-mail will be given to anybody else, even if you ask for. Our answer will be "you give it to them, directly".

The information we need to register you:

a) Given name and family name.
b) An AKA (also known as), in case you want to post anonymously in the Forum.
c) The E-mail address where you want the .zip update packs sent to.
d) City, State & Country where you live or work. (no street address necessary)
e) A photo. If you are shy, one that shows you at some distance.
f ) Brief description of your computer experience (verbose allowed).

This information should be send to Rudy_Penteado at [email]] and a user number will be assigned to you.
If you are not in the position of supplying us with this information, we won't be able to accept your registration. You can always E-mail Rudy_Penteado with arguments or questions and he will try to listen to those, but it is very unlikely that you will be allowed to register with less than that. If you want to know Rudy (who will be discussing rpVT with you), click here.''

Now, some months after Rudy passed away, a small discussion about rpVT's fate occured on ZtreeWin Forum(external link). Kim Henkel informed the community that Rudy gave him the source code of version 4.10 back in April 2005 and that he "told me it was mine to do with as I pleased when he was gone". Some also argued that rpVT has always been free and Rudy would probably have liked to see the latest version of rpVT distributed and used.

With these good arguments in mind, it was decided to put the last version A410 available for download. It was also decided to keep the memory of Rudy_Penteado alive in all way possible. Wiki pages about rpVT are precisely a sincere and permanent tribute to Rudy's life and work.

Note: Most pages related to rpVT on this wiki have Rudy_Penteado as the creator. It was obviously not him who edited these pages, but since all of them come from his former website, we felt it was more respectful to create these wikipages in his name rather than on somebody else name.
